More finishers medals for Jozi Embark newbies at Sun City…

IMG-20160508-WA0059This weekend was a show off weekend for both Sun City and the MiWay Sun City Triathlon. The Embark Jozi newbies, who have been training for the last 3 months for their first triathlon, had a chance to prove themselves over the 750m dam swim, 20km road ride and a 5km on/off road run through the picturesque and pristine Sun City. Although a little chilly in the AM, once the sun was up, it shone and smiled upon all the athletes as they swum, biked, ran and then all celebrated. The setting for this race is unique, and if you are toying with the idea of doing your first triathlon, then this is definitely one to aim for next year in May. We stayed for the weekend in a combination of the Vacation Club and the Cascades, and prepped and registered for the race on Saturday. A highlight of Saturday was a team swim for the final wetsuit practice in the wave pool at the Valley of the Waves! Sunday was race day, meeting nice and early in transition and we all racked together, sharing the nervousness and anticipation of the race. Once the race was done and medals hung around our necks, we celebrated with a team lunch, swapping race stories and realisations that it wasn’t as hard as we had all thought!

20160507_160921_resizedTriathlon is not about arriving at the race, racing and leaving. Triathlon comes alive through the friendships and community created around the training, and this is what Embark embraces. All our coaches are hands on, interested and passionate about the athletes, and this has a very positive effect for the group, who in turn look out for each other and become a team! Its elating and memorable when you run over that finish line and get your medal, but seeing all your Embark counter members finishing too, just adds to the fantastic achievement.

If you are interested in doing your first triathlon, then get hold of us asap, as our winter beginner programs start now. Even if you are more experienced, and just need to join a group for motivation, then pop down and try out a session. You also have the ability to follow ‘program only’ if you can’t make the group sessions but still want to be part of the action and have the contact with a coach. Out next Jozi program builds towards the Bella Bella 5150 in August, so get in contact with us for more info on this. (Our Cape Town group is training for their first triathlon ‘Freshpak Fitness Festival, Clanwilliam Triathlon’ in Oct, and more experienced triathletes are on route for IRONMAN 70.3 Durban).
