At the age of 40 and tipping the scales at over 100kgs…

In March 2014, at the age of 40 and tipping the scales at over 100kgs, I decided enough is enough! I joined the gym and started weight training. I soon realised that this alone was not going to do the trick and that some cardio was called for. I decided on running simply because it seemed to be the easiest and cheapest sport to get into.

I first started on the treadmill and then eventually graduated to parkruns and 5k races in September 2014, which I mostly walked (using a couch to 5k program). It was my brother who challenged me to enter the Two Oceans Half Marathon and here began the most exciting journey of my life. I had no idea how I was going to get from walking 5k to running 21k within the cut off time of 3h10 and all this in 6 months! A friend – who had done triathlon training with Embark – gave me their details. I joined the next day, even though I was terrified.

I remember contacting Garth Dorman and telling him I do not belong in the group because all the people were ‘skinny runners’! He assured me that the training was designed for everybody. 12 weeks of intensive training later, which included climbing Table Mountain – and waving goodbye to 11kgs –  I not only finished the Two Oceans Half Marathon, but I did it within the cut off time. The feeling as I crossed that finish line was indescribable and completely overwhelming as my coach and members of the group cheered me on.  This would not have been possible without the incredible support I received not only from my coach Garth Dorman but also from members of the group. I will not hesitate to recommend Embark to anyone who is interested in embarking on their own running journey, they are absolutely phenomenal!
