Our second ride, 2h30mins, again in glorious sunshine!

Up Up Up Suikerbossie!Today the Embarkers set out for their second ride, this time in 2h30mins. A slight increase from last week. We covered between 40-50kms in that time, brilliant for the beginning of the season. Once again we had amazing weather! The wind picked up slightly towards the end of the ride, offering extra resistance for the drag back to Camps Bay from the top of Suikerbossie.

A tail wind is your best friend, and head wind is irritating, but cross winds are dangerous. Key points to remember when you are dealing with cross winds:

  • keep pedalling in a hard gear, this gives you more stability then  just freewheeling. It sounds dumb, but even if you have to hold the brakes  and STILL pedal to keep the power down and increase your stability.
  • Beware of vehicles passing you and momentarily blocking the cross  wind. Once they have passed, the cross wind gusts back at you, throwing  you in all kind of shapes.

It’s really great to see the motivation of the group at the moment, everyone keen to rack up the miles during our base phase. Many of the athletes are still riding in takkies (trainers), but we envisage the transition very soon as they gain the confidence to ride in cleats.

Next session: Tuesday evening running, weather forecast: 25 degrees and cloudless!! BLISS!

The reward is always COFFEE!!
